Volunteer

Our volunteer programme is currently unavailable.

Together we can make a difference

Become part of the WWR team and start changing and shaping lives. As a volunteer you’ll assist us in the daily running of the rescue centre as well as the ongoing rehabilitation of animals. The focus of the programme is on the animals living at the centre, but also what life on a working farm feels like. You will get a chance to work with apex predators, livestock and get a taste of general farm maintenance as well.

The volunteer programme consists of:

  • Daily feeding of animals.

  • Observation of animal behaviour.

  • Conducting animal health checks.

  • General checks in the afternoon and evening.

  • Checking and clearing of electrical fences.

  • Daily cleaning of enclosures and water throughs.

  • Food preparation for animals.

  • Animal enrichment activities.

  • Maintaining and cleaning cold room meat storage.

  • Assisting with animal medication.

  • Assisting with veterinary care.

  • Assisting with the on-site anti-poaching team.

  • General maintenance and upgrading of enclosures.

  • Assisting with the building and installation of new enclosures.

  • Making and maintaining firebreaks.

  • General farm work.

What’s Expected of Volunteers

Volunteers should have a love of animals, a passion for nature and a desire to protect and preserve our natural heritage. The centre is run in a spirit of co-operation and everyone is expected to give their best at all times. The animals are the top priority, irrespective of the day or hour. The centre requires that you heed the advice and rules given, which are for your safety and that of the animals.

A full introduction covering all aspects of the centre is given WWR. A booklet is also provided which covers the policies and procedures of the centre, organisational structure, code of conduct and clear guidelines on all aspects of working practices. Volunteers are also required to sign an indemnity form acknowledging and accepting the consequences of working in close contact with wild animals.

WWR is a unique wildlife rescue centre and does not offer a luxury holiday experience. We operate in a remote environment and power failures, water shortages, temperature fluctuations and other uncontrollable situations do occur. A positive attitude, a willingness to help and learn, flexibility, understanding and a sense of humour is essential. Volunteers should expect to be dirty and exhausted by the end of the day.
